Strategies for Supporting Newcomer Students' Academic Success
Wednesday, November 20, 2024 | 3:00 - 4:30 PM ET
On behalf of the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Safe and Supportive Schools, the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments (NCSSLE) invites you to join our next webinar— Strategies for Supporting Newcomer Students’ Academic Success.
Newcomer students are students who have arrived in the United States within the last three years and are still learning English (Newcomer Toolkit, 2023). Newcomer students bring a myriad of assets to the school community, including a desire to learn and engage. They also need educators and other school personnel to work with them to learn English and acclimate to their new school community.
Building off previous webinars on welcoming and providing social, emotional, and behavioral supports for newcomer students, this webinar will explore various approaches to supporting newcomer students’ academic success. Our context-setting speaker will share evidence-based principles of what educators can do to support newcomer students’ learning from an asset-based approach. Our panelists will share the strategies they are using and discuss the impact of their efforts and lessons learned. We will end the webinar with the speaker and panelists responding to several questions posed by the audience.
