Medication as part of mental health treatment can be a confusing and stigmatizing topic for anyone but especially BIPOC survivors, immigrants, and refugees. How can mental healthcare providers and domestic violence advocates approach discussions about psychotropic medications with domestic violence survivors in marginalized communities?
By the end of the workshop, the audience should be able to:
· Understand and validate the fears that clients have regarding medications and how these concerns can be magnified for BIPOC survivors of domestic violence.
· Employ best practices for approaching discussions with survivors regarding medication and utilize validating and survivor-centered methods of describing the potential benefits of taking medication.
· Recognize common psychotropic medications in relation to diagnosis/symptoms.
· Understand the benefits of psychiatric care.
· Identify when a referral may be appropriate.
