During this 75-minutes training, Judge McHale will provide an overview on special commitment proceedings. This training will review Joel’s Law and Ricky’s Law, explaining the process through which one may seek involuntary treatment for a loved one. Participants will learn about criteria required for mental health or substance use interventions under these laws, as well as the process in initiating these proceedings in King County.

Judge John McHale was elected to the King County Superior Court bench and began serving on January 9, 2017. Originally from southwest Louisiana, Judge McHale began his legal career in 1990 as a law clerk/bailiff for retired King County Superior Court Judge Terrence Carroll. After clerking for Judge Carroll, Judge McHale served as a Public Defender, as a Deputy Prosecutor in the Criminal and Civil Divisions of the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and as a civil litigator in private practice. Judge McHale has served on criminal, civil, family law and Involuntary Treatment Act rotations. Judge McHale is currently on a civil rotation after 18 months serving as the Lead Judge in the Involuntary Treatment Act Court at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
