Leaning In: Historical Trauma and Cultural Responsiveness in Victim Assistance Services and Programming

Learning about the key differences in cultural competency, cultural humility, and cultural responsiveness and the complexities of historical trauma among traditionally underserved members of communities impacted by crime is a critical factor in delivering trauma-informed services to victims and survivors of crime. This webinar will discuss communicating the importance of cultural responsiveness and how to incorporate these concepts into practice for service delivery and program development to significantly enhance the services and support provided to victims of crime.
The “Leaning In: Historical Trauma and Cultural Responsiveness in Victim Assistance Services and Programming” webinar is part of the Vital Subjects series. This series will address topics that are critical to the victim services field across the country.
Presenters
Kim Fountain
Kim Fountain, Ph.D., has worked in the LGBTQ movement for nearly 30 years and was an adjunct associate professor of Anthropology and Sociology for 11 years. She is currently the Deputy CEO of the San Diego LGBT Community Center. Prior to this role, Dr. Fountain was the Chief Administrative Officer at the Center on Halsted, the Midwest's most comprehensive LGBTQ community center, where she focused on people and culture and developing external relationships.
In addition to her work within the LGBTQ+ movement, Dr. Fountain has served on the board of directors for the National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum and the NYS Coalition Against Sexual Assault. She has also served as a commissioner on the Chicago Commission on Human Relation and as a committee member of the NYS Crime Victims Board Advisory, the Vermont Parallel Justice Advisory Board and Law Enforcement Working Group, and the Chicago Mayor’s Office Advisory Council on Women, Gender Based Violence Committee. She is a published author on issues and services related to anti-LGBTQ violence.
Dr. Fountain has trained with OVC TTAC for over a decade on topics such as: LGBTQ Communities and Substance Use; Historical Trauma and Underserved Communities, Polyvictimization, Military Sexual Trauma, and Cultural Responsiveness.
Michelle Tate
Michelle Tate has been a victim service provider since 2002, providing trauma-informed services focused on at-risk youth and children in the foster care system. Based on experience with youth in need, she founded Stars Mentoring Services, LLC, an internationally accredited child and family service organization that provides therapeutic mentoring to at-risk youth and counseling services for military personnel, first responders, and crime victims and their families. As the director of consulting with Darkness to Light, she created proactive policy and early intervention programming to prevent child sex abuse. She is currently the CEO/principal of The Lighthouse Risk and Readiness Consulting Group, LLC, which provides policy creation, trainings, and risk mitigation services to prevent child abuse and maltreatment.
Before her current roles, Ms. Tate was an intelligence analyst in the U.S. Air Force. With her U.S. Department of Defense training, she created effective threat assessments and developed policies and procedures regarding emergency management, large-scale victim service response, and prevention for universities and schools nationwide. Using her military and victim services expertise, she serves as an OVC TTAC consultant, delivering the Strengthening Military-Civilian Community Partnerships To Respond to Sexual Assault curriculum and most recently, trainings for military victim advocates focused on cultural responsiveness, equity and inclusion. Ms. Tate also provides support and technical assistance to nonprofit and victim service organizations to enhance and develop their existing programs while meeting grant objectives.
