UNDERSTANDING INDIANCHILD WELFARE HISTORY &CURRENT IMPACTS

Kateri Joe, MSW, Treehouse

Francis Cacalda, Alliance for Child Welfare Excellence

This webinar will explain a basic understanding of tribal sovereignty, and historic policies that led to the creation of ICWA. It will discuss how boarding schools and the Sixties Scoop era created the disproportionate rate of Native Americans in the foster care system. It will review some of the safeguards and limitations of ICWA. This is an important training for providers who want to understand how to serve Native Americans in amore culturally appropriate way.
